Interview with Pinchas Avruch of Jewish Spirit-Ruach Yehudit
Pinchas Avruch is the Director of Development for Ruach Yehudit (Jewish Spirit), an Israeli organization contracted by the Education Ministry to provide Jewish education in the secular Israeli public schools and forge the Jewish identity of the next generation of Israeli teenagers.
Jewish Spirit (Ruach Yehudit) provides pupils with a unique learning experience of Jewish culture and values. The program is currently working in over 60 schools across the country
A Problem of National Proportions
For the first few decades of the State of Israel, the Ministry of Education passionately backed the teaching of Jewish subjects in the nation’s schools. The goal was to instill a strong sense of Jewish identity and develop a generation of Israelis who would grow up as knowledgeable Jews.
Even the most secular schools maintained rigorous coursework in Bible (Tanach), Talmud and Jewish law (Halacha).
In recent decades this standard has crumbled. Today, the majority of secular schools in Israel no longer include any traditional Jewish content whatsoever.
As a result, most young secular Israelis lack even a basic understanding of Jewish culture, let alone the deeper, more inspiring ideas and tenets of Judaism. In such an environment, there is little reason to connect to the land of Israel or fight for its defense. Indeed, studies show that draft deferment has become a “fashionable trend” among secular Israelis.
Interview with Marly Silverman of PANDORA
PANDORA founder, Marly Silverman, envisioned that NEIDs patients could do more by advocating together and for each other.
PANDORA is a non-profit organization formed in 2002 to provide patient resources locally in South Florida. Since those humbler beginnings, PANDORA has grown to be an internationally-supported advocacy organization influencing government policy and improving patients' lives locally and nationally.
Largely grassroots in its activities, PANDORA draws on and empowers patients to create the change needed.

Interview with Sarri Singer of One Heart Global
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/jewishprideradio/2011/10/26/interview-with-sarri-singer-of-one-heart-global
Sarri Singer, born in Lakewood, New Jersey, is the daughter of New Jersey State Senator, Robert Singer. Until 9/11, Sarri worked two blocks away from the World Trade Center. Deeply moved by the tragedy of 9/11, Sarri decided to resign from her position in December 2001 and move to Israel. While there, Sarri volunteered with various organizations working with victims of terror. On June 11, 2003, Sarri was on Bus 14 in Jerusalem when an 18 year old Palestinian terrorist dressed as a religious Jew boarded and blew himself up. 16 people were killed, including all those seated and standing around her, and over 100 people were injured. Sarri was hospitalized for two weeks and then returned to New Jersey to be with family. Her story became high profile. She appeared on television stations such as CBS, FoxNews, CNN and radio interviews. She spoke before Congressmen and Senators in Washington, D.C. and politicians in New York and New Jersey.
In September 2003, Sarri returned to work and volunteering in Israel. In June 2004, she returned to the United States and in April 2006, Sarri co-founded an organization called One Heart Global (www.oneheartglobal.org) which focuses on bringing together victims of terrorism, from around the world and assisting with long term psychological care. Sarri has addressed audiences throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel and continues to share her unique insight into the ongoing struggle for victims of terror in Israel and around the world.

The 7 Wonders of Jewish History - Part 2
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/jewishprideradio/2011/10/25/the-7-wonders-of-jewish-history--part-2
Everyone who studies Jewish history perceives that there's something unique about it. What many people don't know, however, is that the unusual and illogical course of Jewish history was predicted in detail in our Torah. Let's examine seven phenomena unique to Jewish history and seven prophecies precisely forecasting these phenomena. Then it'll be up to you to evaluate whether these events could have occurred through the natural channels of human history or whether, perhaps, someone's been pulling the strings, behind the scenes.

Interview with Sharon Rosen - Shiva Connect
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/jewishprideradio/2011/10/04/interview-with-sharon-rosen--shiva-connect
When Sharon's beloved Mom passed away, she experienced how overwhelming "sitting shiva" can be. Exhausted and depleted, she thought, "There must be a better way!" and conceived the idea of a comprehensive website to conveniently provide information, assistance and coordination of the bereavement period. After a year of research and development, she launched, http://ShivaConnect.com - a free resource to help Jewish families and those wishing to express their condolences. It features educational articles, a new "Shiva Registry" technology to privately post and share funeral & shiva details, links for charitable donations, a shiva food zip code search, helpful resources and an emailed Yahrzeit Reminder. It only takes 5 minutes for a relative, Synagogue or caring friend to enter information on a private Shiva Registry page that includes : funeral and shiva dates, times, places, interactive directions, mourners' contact information, food notes, synagogue affiliations, family charitable requests, tributes and who to call if you have a question. A direct link to the Shiva Registry is then emailed, texted, tweeted, posted on Facebook or found through a search on ShivaConnect's home page. With "just a click," family and friends learn sitting shiva details, make charitable donations, find local delis, view/post food planned for each day, find helpful resources and send thoughtful messages to mourners. Families appreciate fewer phone calls, less stress, confusion and wasted food. People near and far learn how best to express their condolences and can conveniently make memorial donations.

Keith Dvorchik (Executive Director) arrived in Gainesville in May 1992 after finishing both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State – Go Nittany Lions). During his first 6 years in Gainesville, Keith worked in the mental health field for the Department of Corrections, Department of Juvenile Justice, the Department of Children and Families, and Meredian Behavioral Healthcare, where he was specialized in forensic mental health, mental illness, and family evaluations and assessments. He also had a small private practice which he closed in 2003. While putting himself through his Master’s program, Keith opened his own company, Capital Investments, and he traveled the country dealing with the Sports Memorabilia business. Keith is obsessed with The New York Yankees, Florida Gators, and Penn State Nittany Lions, Classic Rock, cult flicks like “Dogma” and “Vision Quest” and... oh yeah... his incredible family. Keith has the best job in the world working with the greatest students in the world. The worst part of Keith’s job is the amount of travel required, so email is the best way to reach him, but please meet him and find out more by asking him to treat you to coffee, ice cream, or a meal!
Keith can be reached at keith@ufhillel.orgor 352-372-2900 x1234 but due to his travel schedule, email gets a much quicker reply.
The Norman H Lipoff Hall - Hillel at the University of Florida is the focal point for Jewish campus life for more than 8,000 Jewish University students in Gainesville. Our mission is to enrich the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world. Together, we are building a new generation of Jewish leaders. Some call it Jewish life on campus. We call it... the future.

Remembering September 11th

We are not the ones who have the right to make that decision.
Forgiveness is a divine trait. It defines the goodness of God. Without it, human beings probably couldn't survive. Because God forgives, there's still hope for sinners. When we do wrong, God reassures us that He won't abandon us as a result of our transgressions. Divine forgiveness is the quality that most clearly proves God's love for us.

David Ben-Gurion was the first Prime Minister of Israel. Ben-Gurion's passion for Zionism, which began early in life, culminated in his instrumental role in the founding of the state of Israel. After leading Israel to victory in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Ben-Gurion helped build the state institutions and oversaw the absorption of vast numbers of Jews from all over the world. Upon retiring from political life in 1970, he moved to Sde Boker, a kibbutz in the Negev desert, where he lived until his death. For a long time Safed has been a well kept secret, even to most Israelis.
For a long time Safed has been a well kept secret, even to most Israelis.
Its past is also rich and great. According to legend, Safed is where Shem and Ever, son and grandson of Noah, established their yeshiva where Jacob (Yaakov Avinu) studied for many years. According to other sources, the town was founded in 70AD. The city flourished in the 16th century, when many famous Jewish religious scholars and mystics moved to Safed following the Spanish Expulsion,, fleeing from the horrors of the Inquisition. Safed then became the spiritual center of the Jewish world, where Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) reached the peak of its influence. Kabbalists, such as Rabbi Yitzhak Luria (Ha-Ari HaKadosh) and Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz (author of Lecha Dodi) and Rabbi Yosef Karo (author of the Shulchan Aruch) just to name a few, made the city famous. It was here that the first printing press in the Middle East was set up, publishing in 1578 the first Hebrew book to be printed in Israel. At that time the town was also a thriving trade center.. However, Safed suffered terribly during the ensuing years due to earthquakes, plagues and Arab attacks. In modern times, the liberation of Safed was one of the most dramatic episodes in the 1948 War of Independence.
Safed is one of the four holy cities in Israel, together with Jerusalem, Hebron and Tiberias.

The Gift of Rest: Rediscovering the Beauty of the Sabbath
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/jewishprideradio/2011/06/29/the-gift-of-rest-rediscovering-the-beauty-of-the-sabbath
The Sabbath is a gift that Senator Joe Lieberman, as an observant Jew, received from his parents who, in turn, received it from their parents, who received it from generations of Jews before them. According to ancient tradition, the line of transmission extends back to Moses at Mt. Sinai, who received the Sabbath as the fourth of the Ten Commandments. In this book, Lieberman will offer the gift of Sabbath observance—a gift that has anchored, ordered, and inspired his life—to readers of all faiths.
In the past century, the Sabbath has fallen on hard times. It is thought of as just another day or as a time to squeeze in some extra errands or recreation that you may have missed during the workweek. The weekend passes in a blur of often meaningless activity. Combining personal and political memoir with history and broadly informed religious reflection, this book is a practical how-to guide, with simple suggestions for introducing the Sabbath into your own life. It will be a very personal book, yet also one animated by reflections on history and larger social trends. It will also include profound reflections of both classical and modern Jewish sages, from the Talmud and the ancient Jewish prayer book, the Siddur, to Maimonides, to Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and Rabbi Soloveitchik.

U.S. Commitment To Israel's Security Is Essential

Given the continuing turmoil in the Middle East and the escalation in violence against Israel, the United States must keep its commitment to Israel's security by funding pledged aid for fiscal year 2012. Dramatic events in the Middle East underscore both the fragility of Israel's security situation and Israel's importance as the regions's sole stable, pro-Western democracy.

Efforts are intensifying for the release of Israeli hostage Gilad Shalit on the fifth anniversary of his capture by the terrorist organization Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had accepted a German-mediated deal for Shalit's release, and was awaiting Hamas' response.
"This proposal was harsh; it was not simple for the State of Israel," Netanyahu said Sunday according to a statement released after the weekly Cabinet meeting. "However, we agreed to accept it in the belief that it was balanced between our desire to secure Gilad's release and to prevent possible harm to the lives and security of the Israeli people. As of now, we have yet to receive Hamas's official answer to the German mediator's proposal."
Mass rallies were planned this weekend in Israel, including a protest Saturday outside Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Caesaria, the Shalit campaign’s weekly protest in Jerusalem on Sunday and a 24-hour event at Herzliya Studios.

Five principles of healthy, esteem-building praise.
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/jewishprideradio/2011/06/21/five-principles-of-healthy-esteem-building-praise
The positive power of praise is well documented. As children grow, they need emotional feedback to mirror who they are. Praise is one way they learn about themselves. When they learn honest, specific positives, they develop confidence and esteem.

How to attain true self-esteem
The importance of self-esteem is not debatable. The renowned psychologist Dr. Abraham Maslow lists self-esteem at the top of man's hierarchy of needs -- behind only food, shelter and interpersonal relationships.
How we attain that respect is another issue.

San Francisco’s misguided attempt to ban circumcision
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/jewishprideradio/2011/06/16/san-franciscos-misguided-attempt-to-ban-circumcision
Circumcision, or “bris milah,” has long been the stuff of cheap jokes and comedy. But in recent weeks, what used to be nothing more than harmless fare has taken on a much more serious tone. So-called “inactivates” on the fringe left of American politics have pushed the radical notion that infant circumcision is an act of genital mutilation, so unacceptable, in fact, that it ought to be illegal, with “no account be taken…of any belief on the part of that person … as a matter of custom or ritual.”
